Conqueror Design Contest [HIROMI INAYOSHI Design]

Concept of HIROMI INAYOSHI Design

HIROMI INAYOSHI Design

For me, the quintessence of graphic design is symbol mark,
and all of graphic design is crystallized into its application, which is
visiting cards, letterheads, envelopes and other stationery.

MESSAGE

CONQUEROR DESIGN CONTEST

Conqueror Design Contest, for which
I have the honor of being on the panel of judges
in 2005 and 2007, is one of the greatest
biannual contests with a long and distinguished
history for the design of marks and stationeries
(visiting cards, letterheads, and envelopes),
hosted by Conqueror of Arjowiggins and Yamato
Inc. As the history of graphic design can be
traced back all the way to symbol marks and sta-
tionery designs, the essence of graphic
design is found condensed in them I myself have
been carving out my own world of graphic
design through the continuous quest of marks and
stationery designs as well as paper and
typography. Therefore, I sincerely hope that as
many students and future graphic designers
as possible master the essence of graphic design
by challenging Conqueror Design Contest.

CONQUEROR DESIGN CONTEST 2005
JAPAN AND KOREA
DESIGN THEME

Under the theme of UN Project for
Ageing Issues Symbol marks
and stationeries for Successful Ageing

Contributing to the Society by Design
Conqueror Design Contests held in Japan
has taken up the mission of contributing
to the society. In the present society,
the idea of corporate social responsibility
(CSR) has become common among the
business entities, and the world of design
is no exception, where its new and fresh
role is being sought after. Conqueror
Design Contest 2005 set as the theme of
its assignment section UNESCAP’s
Project for Ageing Issues, with collabora-
tion from NPO Earth Identity Projects.
The top 4 designs chosen from Japan and
Korea were presented to UNESCAP
and used as the project letterheads and
the symbol marks of conferences.

CONQUEROR DESIGN CONTEST 2005
JAPAN AND KOREA
VISUAL CAMPAIGN

My mission in the Conqueror Design
Contest 2005, resumed after 10 years’ blank,
was to convey the tradition and pride of
Conqueror as top bland of stationery paper,
and the innovative character of the
Contest which is confined to the design of
symbol marks and corporate stationeries.
Therefore, I used paper as the symbol
and underlying concept of the Contest since
it is the essential host of graphic design
and stationery.

UNDERLYING CONCEPT OF
VISUAL CAMPAIGN

Paper gives life to corporate stationery.
And paper has its own life, too, as it is made
from trees. The symbol of the Contest
was thus created by visualizing paper as
living matter in order to re-create
the magical reality inherent in name cards,
letterheads, envelops and even in a
sheet of paper.

The visual image of paper as living
matter was created with black Arche paper
of Arjowiggins, which has more than
500 years history. It was cut into the size of
name card(50 91mm), and then given
life by profound and dramatic photos of 5
different angles by Tamotsu Fujii.
His photos thoroughly re-created the image
I had intended, that of the monolith in
the movie “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Then
this core symbol was rolled out into
the posters, brochures, advertisements,
and Websites in Japan and Korea.

The Symbol Mark and Stationery Design
for Golden Children’s School,
the Elementary School in the People’s
Republic of Bangladesh

A new elementary school is going to be
built in the village of Companyganj, Sylhet
District, by NGO Earth Identity Projects.
It will be named Golden Children’s School
after the image of Golden Bengal with its
beautiful farm belt. And it is children
who are the treasure and symbol of future
of Golden Bengal. Inspired by this
concept, we took on the symbol mark and
stationery design for this school as the
theme of the assignment section of
the Contest in 2007, in line with our activities
to contribute to the global society with
graphic design. Three gold-prize winners
chosen in Japan, Korea and Taiwan
respectively will be donated to the school.

CONQUEROR DESIGN CONTEST 2007
JAPAN KOREA TAIWAN
VISUAL IDENTITY DESIGN-VISUAL
CAMPAIGN

The basic concept of the Conqueror
Design Contest 2007 Japan, Korea and
Taiwan was the designing per se of
symbol marks and stationeries, so that its
visual campaign would be carried out
more symbolically.

This means that the primary symbol mark
designed for the Contest 2007 and the
official stationeries with its application, such
as name cards, letterheads and envelops,
served as the illuminating exemplars for the
young designers and designers-to-be in
the participant countries. All the posters,
brochures, advertisements and Websites in
Japan, Korea and Taiwan were visually
standardized under the same identity design,
and appealed the internationalism
and the spirit of innovation of the Contest.

CONCEPT OF SYMBOL MARK

Letterheads encircle the Earth.
The image of letterheads ening the Earth
is visualized with artistic colors and
configuration. The squares which fill up
the circle to form the symbol mark
represent letterheads and symbolize the
future of corporate stationery.
